The NDP has proposed a bill that would impose a tax on mp3 players to compensate for the music industry's losses due to file sharing, and that would eventually legalize music sharing.
I strongly disagree with the bill. I don't buy music; I listen to free music. As far as I know, my phone doesn't contain any commercialized music that I normally have to pay for. I listen to music produced by independent artists who love music, not money. This music is distributed freely on the Internet: I can't even pay for it if I wanted to, much of the time.
Do most people pirate commercial music? Yes. Does the bill create a positive effect in most cases? Yes. But, the bill also forces me to unwillingly help an industry that I don't support, every time I go out an purchase an mp3 player. It is not my responsibility to compensate an industry that already thrives despite what it claims.
Yes, pirates will be pirates. Don't screw me over because of them.
